The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has announced a nationwide ban on the fabrication, importation, sale, and use of “Chanfan” machines, citing their devastating environmental impact on the nation’s water bodies and ecosystems.
In a statement issued by the Authority, the EPA revealed that the fabrication of these machines has been ongoing without the required permits or environmental authorization, in clear violation of the Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124) and the Environmental Assessment Regulations, 2025 (L.I. 2504).
According to the EPA, while the trade and manufacture of Chanfan machines may have provided a source of income for some individuals, their deployment in riverine mining operations has led to alarming levels of water pollution, siltation of riverbeds, and loss of aquatic biodiversity.

“The fabrication, importation, and use of Chanfan machines without an EPA permit are prohibited with immediate effect. Any workshops or shops found producing or selling these machines will be shut down, and all existing equipment will be seized and dismantled,” the statement read.
The Authority further directed that all individuals, workshops, and establishments engaged in the production, importation, or distribution of Chanfan machines must cease operations immediately.
The EPA also issued a stern warning to individuals and companies conducting illegal mining within water bodies, emphasizing that such practices are serious violations of national environmental and mining laws.
To ensure compliance, the EPA says it will collaborate with security agencies to undertake enforcement operations involving monitoring, seizure, and prosecution of offenders.
Members of the public seeking further clarification have been encouraged to contact the EPA via client.relations@epa.gov.gh or call 0506694760 / 0507227726, or visit the Authority’s website at www.epa.gov.gh.
