Participants at a Forum of Civil Education Clubs at Ekumfi District have been urged to be ambassadors of environmental cleanliness wherever they found themselves.
The forum, organised by the Ekumfi Directorate of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), under theme: “Ending Plastic Pollution: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle,” was to celebrate the 2025 edition of the World Environment Day at Essarkyir.
Madam Cecilia Dam, Head of Ekumfi District NCCE, who made the call, advocated for concerted efforts to safeguard and protect the environment from destruction.

Essarkyir Methodist Basic school, Essuehyia Methodist Basic School, Youngsters Future Foundation Institute, Traditional Leaders, Patrons, officials from the District Assembly and the District Education office, Teachers, youth groups and other stakeholders in the district, participated in the forum
The engagement was particularly, aimed to inspire the students to be responsible citizens and environmental stewards, and also to encourage the entire people living in the district to cultivate the habit of protecting the environment as stated in article 41(k) of the 1992 Constitution which mandates the citizenry to safeguard and protect the environment.
Madam Dam advised the pupils on the importance of rethinking plastic waste by applying the principles of reducing its usage, re-use and recycle and further entreated them to be law-abiding, patriotic and responsible citizens for a better future of Ghana.
Madam Yayra Forgive Ameglah, Ekumfi District Environmental Health Director, who was the programme’s resource person, underscored the critical issues such as the detrimental effects of plastic pollution on the environment, waste management strategies and the crucial role young people play in safeguarding and protecting the environment.
She further encouraged participants to constantly keep their surroundings clean and influence positive behavioural changes within their families and among their peers, emphasising that a clean environment began with a shift in mindset.
Nana Ishmael Asamoah, Ekumfi District Executive who was the special guest of honour, in his address commended the Commission and the schools for presenting an insightful programme to commemorate the day.
He said the initiative would significantly deepen the pupils’ understanding of environmental protection for them to become good and responsible citizens for the betterment of Ekumfi State and the country at large.
The pupils finally, staged a drama on the environment and engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue that showed their understanding of good environmental practices.
Certificates were presented to all participating schools, recognising their contribution towards awareness creation on sustainable environmental practices.
To round off the event, trees were planted within the compound of Essarkyir Methodist Basic school by the DCE.
He was assisted by Nana Essel VII, Odikro of Essarkyir and dignitaries present and some pupils, to symbolise their commitment at restoring and protecting the environment.
It was also to reinforce the message of environmental stewardship among the young participants.
