Cyber Security Authority, Police Crack Down on SIMbox and Online Fraud Syndicates

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) of Ghana, in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional Police Command and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, has carried out two successful operations against cybercriminal networks over the weekend.

In the first operation, which spanned three locations around Sakumono in the Greater Accra Region, security agencies dismantled a sophisticated SIMbox fraud operation. The raid led to the arrest of three Nigerian nationals believed to be directly involved in the illegal activities, as well as a Ghanaian landlord accused of providing facilities for the operation.

SIMbox fraud is a form of cybercrime that reroutes international calls as local calls, causing significant revenue losses to telecom operators and the state.

In a separate operation at Vakpo in the Volta Region, authorities arrested a three-member syndicate made up of Ghanaians engaged in impersonation, sextortion and Mobile Money (MoMo)-related fraud. Investigations revealed that the suspects had impersonated the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

All suspects from both operations have been processed for court and are expected to face prosecution in accordance with Ghana’s laws.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to tackling cybercrime, the Minister cautioned that while Ghana remains a hospitable nation, it will not tolerate criminal activities—especially in cyberspace.

“Ghana is a hospitable nation, but be assured that if you choose to engage in cybercrime, we will track you down, arrest you, and make you face the full rigours of our legal system,” the statement warned.

The successful operations underscore the growing collaboration between security agencies to protect the digital space and safeguard citizens from cyber-enabled crimes.
