UDS Makes History, Wins FISU University Football World Cup

The University for Development Studies (UDS) has made history by becoming the first Ghanaian and African institution to win the FISU University Football World Cup, drawing nationwide celebration and praise.

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, on behalf of the Government of Ghana, extended heartfelt congratulations to UDS for what he described as a “truly historic and inspiring achievement.”

UDS’s remarkable journey saw them rise from continental champions to global winners, defeating Spain’s University of Granada in the semi-finals before clinching victory over Brazil’s Paulista University in a thrilling final. The Minister noted that their success reflected “tactical discipline, mental fortitude, and technical brilliance,” qualities that set them apart on the world stage.

“This achievement is clear proof that when talent, preparation, resilience, and strong institutional support align with national pride, excellence follows,” Hon. Adams stated.

The victory also comes with broader significance. By lifting the trophy, UDS has secured an additional qualification slot for African institutions in the next edition of the FISU World Cup — a milestone that positions the continent more competitively in global university sport.

The Minister lauded the technical team led by Coach Ibrahim Tanko, the university’s management, the Sports Directorate, and all the student athletes for their outstanding performance. He emphasized that UDS has not only raised the profile of Ghana but also carried the African flag with pride and distinction.

“Your pathway from the classroom to the global stage shows that the future of Ghanaian sports is brighter than ever. Ghana is proud of you, and the Government celebrates you,” he added.

UDS’s victory marks a defining moment in Ghana’s sporting history, cementing the institution’s place as a pioneer in African university sports.
