Africa – Ivory Coast: Baleine Field to Begin Production in 2023

Production from Ivory Coast’s highly anticipated Baleine oil field is expected in 2023. Owned by a consortium comprising ENI, an Italian multinational oil and gas company, and Petroci, the Ivorian national oil company, the consortium jointly operates and manages the field for exploration, development, and production of hydrocarbons in the area. Located near Assouindé, southeast of Abidjan, this significant oil field is projected to yield over 2 billion barrels of crude oil and 2,400 to 3,300 billion cubic feet of natural gas in two phases. The initial phase, slated to commence in 2023, will account for 15% of the field’s total production, while the subsequent phase is expected to span 30 years. Recent drilling in Baleine E1X has unveiled even greater reserves of oil and gas in the a...

AFCON 2023 moved to 2024

The next AFCON will be played in Ivory Coast in 2024, and not 2023, Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe said on Sunday. The tournament was to be hosted in June-July 2023, which is the height of the rainy season on the Ivory Coast. "We cannot take the risk," the South African said in the Moroccan capital Rabat. With the World Cup in Qatar taking place in November and December this year, the decision has been taken to postpone the finals rather than bring them forward. It means the Nations Cup will be held in January and December for the second time in a row, after this year's tournament in Cameroon. In 2017, Caf announced that it would move the finals from their traditional January-February slot to June-July in a bid to avoid repeated disput...

June 14, 2022 6:05 am Ivory Coast goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo has been handed an 18-month ban by football’s world governing body Fifa for a doping violation. The 33-year-old tested positive last year for the banned substance trimetazidine, a heart medication which the World Anti-Doping Agency categorises as a stimulant. His ban has been backdated to 23 December and he will be free to play again on 24 June 2023. This is one day after the 2023 Nations Cup gets underway in Ivory Coast, with the finals ending a month later. Gbohouo was provisionally suspended in December and missed this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. His positive test came after a 2022 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon on 16 November. “As a result of the presence of the prohibited su...

Ivory Coast aims to raise $1.5 billion to restore forests, land

Ivory Coast aims to raise $1.5 billion for a five-year land restoration programme to bring back forests and increase food production, President Alassanne Ouattara said on Monday at the start of a United Nations conference on desertification. The world's top cocoa producer lost 80% of its forests between 1900 and 2021 and risks losing them all by 2050 if the pace of decline continues, Ouattara said at the opening ceremony of the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) in the financial capital Abidjan. He did not specify whom he hoped would provide the money, but called on the private sector to help fund a separate ongoing $1 billion government project to restore three million hectares of forest by 2030. The new five-year "Abidjan Legacy Programme" will use technologies such as ...

The statement gave few details but said nine people, including Ivorians and foreign nationals, had been arrested and investigations were under way. The previous record haul was just over a year ago when about a tonne of cocaine was seized in one of Abidjan’s northern districts. Major drug hauls in Ivory Coast are rare, but large cocaine seizures have become increasingly common along the West African Atl...
