Known in private life as Barima Kwaku Duah, Otumfuo was born on May 6, 1950, at Ash Town, a popular community in Kumasi, the capital of Ashanti Region. A true royal of the Golden Stool of the Asante Kingdom, he is the last child of the five children of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II. Barima Kwaku Duah, at the age of 49, was enstooled as the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool in 1999, succeeding his late brother, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II.
