Seven Suspects Arrested in Fuel Tanker Robbery Near Suhum

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested seven individuals in connection with the hijacking of a fuel tanker near Mante, close to Suhum in the Eastern Region.

According to preliminary investigations, the incident occurred on August 6, 2025, when the suspects, traveling in a green pickup truck, intercepted a fuel tanker with registration number GT 2493-20. They allegedly handcuffed the driver and his mate, placed them in the pickup, and drove the tanker away.

Police say that on August 7, 2025, personnel in the Accra Region intercepted the pickup and rescued the victims. One suspect, identified as Christian Bortey Bernard, was arrested after a hot chase.

Further intelligence led officers to a fuel filling station at Asikwa Junction near Bunso, where the stolen tanker was found alongside another fuel tanker with registration number GN 804-13. Six additional suspects — Mark Abito (34), Shaibu Adams (27), Awini Ibrahim (25), Muniru Ayeba (19), Banabas Atiga (26), and Abdullah Ganiu (32) — were apprehended.

Two fuel tankers, a pumping machine, and a Golf car with registration number GW 5185-Z were impounded.

The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations. The Accra Regional Police Command has urged drivers and transport operators to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activity or vehicles to the nearest police station.

In a statement, the Command also warned individuals or groups involved in criminal activities that they will be relentlessly pursued, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
