ONE ARRESTED FOR USING OFFENSIVE WEAPON AND CAUSING HARM AT WALEWALE

Police in the Walewale District of the North East Region have arrested a 25-year-old man, Rafai Tahiru, for possession of an offensive weapon and for allegedly assaulting a man in connection with a stolen mobile phone incident.

According to a police report, the suspect and two accomplices, who are currently on the run, accused the victim of stealing a mobile phone belonging to Rafai Tahiru. On Saturday, October 4, 2025, the trio allegedly tied the victim’s hands and legs with ropes, placed him in a tricycle, and subjected him to severe beatings with canes. They also inflicted multiple machete wounds on his forehead and body.

The victim was rescued by onlookers and rushed to the Walewale Government Hospital for treatment. A formal complaint was subsequently lodged with the Walewale Police.

Following the incident, the suspects fled the area, but on Sunday, October 5, 2025, police intelligence led to the arrest of Rafai Tahiru at his hideout in Tampulungu, a suburb of Walewale.

A search conducted in the suspect’s room uncovered a machete stained with blood, believed to have been used in the assault.

The suspect is currently in police custody and will be arraigned before court. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to apprehend his two accomplices who remain at large.
