Government Announces the Passing of Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

The Government of Ghana has announced, with deep regret and profound sorrow, the to passing of Her Excellency Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, former First Lady of the Republic and Founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement.

According to an official statement signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Mrs. Rawlings passed away on the morning of Thursday, October 23, 2025, after a short illness.

The government described her passing as a great loss to the nation, noting her exceptional contribution to Ghana’s political and social development. Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings was widely celebrated for her pioneering advocacy for women’s empowerment, leadership in social reform, and enduring influence on national policy during and after her tenure as First Lady.

“The Government extends its deepest condolences to her immediate family and all who mourn this irreplaceable loss,” the statement read.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings served as First Lady from 1979 to 2001, during the administration of her late husband, former President Jerry John Rawlings. She was also the founder and leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and remains one of Ghana’s most prominent figures in the advancement of women’s rights and political participation.

Her legacy continues to inspire generations of women and men dedicated to equality, justice, and national service.
