The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the nationwide distribution of 6,607,095 sanitary pads to school girls across all 16 regions as part of efforts to promote menstrual hygiene and ensure uninterrupted education for adolescent girls.
The initiative coincides with the global commemoration of the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, which is being observed under the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis.” The day serves as an important reminder of the need to protect, empower, and invest in the development of girls across the world, especially in the area of education and health.
In a statement issued in Accra, the Management of GES reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the welfare, dignity, and educational advancement of every girl in Ghana. According to the Service, the large-scale distribution of sanitary pads forms part of the Government of Ghana’s pledge to provide free sanitary products to school girls—from the basic to second-cycle levels—on a monthly basis throughout their schooling period.

The GES explained that this intervention seeks to tackle menstrual hygiene challenges that often hinder girls’ regular school attendance, while also boosting their confidence, participation, and overall academic performance.
“This initiative demonstrates government’s commitment to promoting gender equality in education, safeguarding the health of adolescent girls, and creating an enabling environment for every learner to thrive,” the statement read.
The Service further encouraged all school girls to remain focused on their studies and to take full advantage of the educational opportunities provided to them. It also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education for its instrumental role in operationalising what it described as a “life-changing initiative” for school girls nationwide.
The GES reaffirmed its dedication to building an inclusive, equitable, and gender-responsive education system that empowers girls to become active leaders and change-makers in their communities and beyond.
