EPA to Roll Out Nationwide Compliance Enforcement Exercises Under Environmental Protection Act, 2025

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) of Ghana has announced that it will embark on a series of Compliance Enforcement Exercises across the country to ensure strict adherence to environmental regulations and sustainable development practices.

The move, the EPA says, is in line with its mandate under the Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124), as well as the Environmental Assessment Regulations, 1999 (LI 1652) and the Hazardous Electronic and Other Wastes (Classification), Control and Management Regulations, 2016 (LI 2250).

According to the Authority, the nationwide exercises will target businesses, industries, undertakings, entities, project proponents, and the general public. The enforcement is aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s natural and built environment by ensuring compliance with established laws and standards.

Scope of Enforcement

The EPA outlined key areas of focus for the upcoming exercises, including:

  • Verification of valid environmental permits and licenses.
  • Compliance with operational conditions under Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and permit guidelines.
  • Payment of mandated environmental fees and charges as prescribed under Act 1080.
  • Prevention and control of pollution and environmental hazards.
  • Adherence to approved Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), and Preliminary Environmental Reports.
  • Proper waste management and disposal practices.
  • Monitoring and enforcement of activities categorized under the Environmental Protection Act and related regulations.

Commitment to Environmental Protection

The Authority emphasized that these measures reflect its ongoing commitment to safeguarding the environment, promoting sustainable development, and holding violators accountable.

Businesses and industries are therefore urged to ensure full compliance with environmental regulations ahead of the enforcement exercises.
