The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed deep concern over the arrest and continued detention of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
In a strongly worded statement released earlier today, Dr. Bawumia criticized the lack of clarity surrounding the charges against Mr. Wontumi and called attention to the uncertainty regarding his current location.
“I am deeply concerned about the arrest and continued detention of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Wontumi), particularly as the charges remain vague, and his whereabouts remain unknown,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that every Ghanaian—regardless of political affiliation or public standing—is guaranteed their constitutional rights.
“In a democratic environment such as ours, no individual is above the law. Equally, no Ghanaian—regardless of political affiliation or status—should ever be denied their constitutional rights. Justice and due process are not optional; they are the foundation of our democracy,” he added.
The NPP flagbearer revealed that he has been in direct contact with Mr. Wontumi’s legal team since the morning to ensure that his rights are not violated and that due process is being followed. He commended the legal team for their vigilance and professionalism.
Dr. Bawumia also issued a call to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and all relevant state institutions to act strictly within the confines of the law.
“I urge the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and all relevant state institutions to act strictly within the bounds of the law and to respect the rights of Mr. Wontumi as guaranteed by our Constitution. Any deviation from these principles risks undermining public trust in our justice system and weakening the democratic values we have worked hard to build,” he warned.
Concluding his statement, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed his belief in the supremacy of the rule of law and the need for institutions to be both firm and fair.
“Ghana must always remain a nation governed by law—not by arbitrary power. Our Republic is strongest when our institutions are both firm and fair,” he stated.
The statement has sparked widespread attention on social media and among political observers, with many awaiting further developments in the case involving Chairman Wontumi. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
