Drilling for Hope commissions four boreholes for needy schools

Drilling for Hope, in partnership with the Ghana Poultry Network (GAPNET), at the weekend commissioned four hand pump boreholes for four needy schools in four districts in the Upper East Region. The beneficiary schools included Winkogo Junior High School in Talensi, Nayorigo Primary School in Bongo, and two other schools in Zebilla in the Bawku West and the Garu District respectively. The initiative formed part of Drilling for Hope’s efforts to improve access to safe drinking water and promote effective teaching and learning in deprived communities in Ghana. Strong tidal wave sinks 28-member boat at Elmina Fishing Harbour

Another boat has sunk at the Elmina Fishing Harbour, on Saturday afternoon after being struck by a powerful tidal wave, causing extensive damage. The 28-member crew was however unharmed.  The vessel, an eight-year-old boat, collided with underwater rocks and boulders around 1130 hours, pushing off its course by strong winds toward the rocky sea defence at the harbour. This is the second boat to suffer such a fate within the state of one month and the sixth boat disaster at the Central Region’s major fishing harbour in three years, raising serious concerns about safety. Volta GPRTU debunks 20 per cent lorry fare increase claims

The Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has denied reports of a 20 per cent increase in lorry fares across the country and the region. The Union clarified that no official meeting was held with the Ministry of Transport and other relevant authorities to discuss what could necessitate any approval of such a hike. Mr. Lawrence Awilo Attitoe, the Volta Regional Vice Chairman, emphasised that the GPRTU was the only recognised union for transport operators in country and any fare adjustments would typically involve discussions with relevant stakeholders, including the government and casted doubt on the legitimacy of the reported fare increase. Small Arms Commission launches campaign against small arms proliferation

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons has rolled out a nationwide public education campaign dubbed “Silence the Gun, Save a Life”. The campaign forms part of efforts to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Ghana. The Commission is engaging students from selected Junior High Schools and tertiary institutions on the dangers of gun violence while promoting a culture of peace and security. US reverses visa restrictions on Ghana

The United States Government has lifted visa restrictions imposed on Ghana, paving the way for Ghanaians to once again be eligible for five-year multiple entry visas and other consular privileges. Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced the development in New York on Friday on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly. Oti Regional Minister hands over seized water pumps machines to cooperative farmers
