BREAKING NEWS: Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Passes Away at 82

Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82. The news of his passing was confirmed early Monday morning by a family spokesperson at his residence in Daura, Katsina State.

Buhari, a retired Major General and one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures, served as the country’s president from 2015 to 2023, following his historic election win that ended the 16-year rule of the People’s Democratic Party. He had earlier led the nation as military head of state from 1983 to 1985 after a successful coup.

According to close sources, Buhari had been battling age-related health complications in recent months but remained private about his condition. He passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by close family members and aides.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a week of national mourning and ordered all flags flown at half-mast across the country. In a brief address to the nation, President Tinubu described Buhari as “a patriot who dedicated his life to the unity, security, and progress of Nigeria.”

A Controversial But Influential Legacy

Muhammadu Buhari’s time in office was marked by significant developments and challenges. His administration prioritized anti-corruption efforts, infrastructural development, and the fight against Boko Haram insurgency. While lauded by supporters for his discipline and integrity, critics often pointed to issues of human rights, economic instability, and concerns over democratic freedoms during his tenure.

Following his exit from power in 2023, Buhari retired to his hometown in Daura, where he lived a relatively quiet life and largely avoided political commentary, despite occasional public statements on national matters.

Tributes have begun pouring in from African leaders and international partners, including the African Union, ECOWAS, and the United Nations, all hailing Buhari’s role in shaping regional security and democratic transitions.

Funeral Arrangements

Family members have announced that funeral arrangements will follow Islamic traditions. A state funeral is expected to take place later this week in Abuja, with dignitaries from across the continent expected to attend.

Nigeria mourns the loss of one of its most polarizing yet enduring statesmen — a man whose journey from military ruler to democratically elected president shaped decades of Nigerian politics.
