Ashanti Region Police Recover Weapons and Ammunition from Abandoned Vehicle

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched investigations into the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition after a patrol team from the Kuntanase District intercepted an abandoned vehicle loaded with weapons on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

According to police reports, officers conducting routine patrols along the Aputuagya-Bekwai road spotted a white Toyota Sienta, with registration number NR 289-24, suspiciously parked near a bushy roadside.

Two men were seen standing by the vehicle, allegedly smoking a substance suspected to be narcotics. However, upon noticing the approaching police team, the men bolted into the nearby bush and managed to evade arrest despite a chase by the officers.

A search conducted on the abandoned car uncovered a cache of weapons and other items believed to be linked to the preparation of a crime. The recovered items include:

  • One (1) AK-47 assault rifle (Serial No. 29546)
  • One (1) locally manufactured firearm
  • Two (2) AK-47 magazines, each loaded with 30 rounds
  • Four (4) packets of AK-47 ammunition, each containing 25 rounds
  • Seven (7) loose rounds of ammunition
  • One pair of Wellington boots
  • One Huawei smartphone
  • Cowrie shells
  • One pair of sandals
  • A Ghana Card and Temporary Driver’s License (details withheld for investigative purposes).

The vehicle has since been impounded at the Kuntanase Police Station, with all retrieved items kept as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations.

In a statement, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Ashanti Region, assured the public that the Police Command remains committed to clamping down on violent crime and safeguarding residents.

He further appealed to members of the public to assist in the manhunt for the fleeing suspects by volunteering any information that could lead to their arrest. Citizens are encouraged to report to the nearest police station or contact the police emergency lines: 191, 18555, or 112.
