Yonge-Dundas Square Officially Renamed Sankofa Square with Strong Ghanaian Presence

Toronto’s iconic Yonge-Dundas Square has officially been renamed Sankofa Square, in a historic ceremony that coincided with the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

The event, marked with cultural performances and speeches, drew dignitaries, community leaders, and global representatives. Ghana, a central symbol in the history of the transatlantic slave trade and a beacon of Pan-African identity, was proudly represented at the ceremony by top government officials and cultural ambassadors.
The Ghanaian delegation highlighted The Black Star Experience, a campaign showcasing Ghana’s heritage and cultural tourism, while also promoting the country as a leading destination for Africans in the diaspora seeking to reconnect with their roots.

The renaming to Sankofa Square—a Ghanaian Adinkra symbol meaning “go back and fetch it”—is seen as a powerful act of remembrance and a call for collective healing. It reflects Toronto’s commitment to honoring the history and resilience of people of African descent while creating a space for cultural exchange and reflection.

Officials noted that Sankofa Square will serve as a hub for dialogue, remembrance, and celebration of African identity in Canada and beyond.
