Volta Health Network (VHN), a non‑profit coalition of health professionals from the Volta Region, has taken its annual medical outreach to the Ketu North Municipal Hospital in Weta, offering three days of free specialist services to residents.
The outreach, which began on Friday, July 11, provides screening, consultations and surgery for eye disorders, cardiac conditions, hernias, fibroids, cancers, and other chronic ailments.
VHN General Secretary Mr. Leonard Gobah, during press briefing on Saturday July 12 at the hospital said the initiative was launched in 2022 after clinicians from the region recognised that many local hospitals lack specialist personnel

“We have good facilities but too few specialists, so people live with treatable conditions for years because of cost or distance. Our aim is to break that barrier by moving from district to district every year.”
This fourth mission follows earlier outreaches in Keta, Adidome and Kpando.
Hosting and feeding more than 60 volunteer surgeons, physicians, nurses, and allied staff for three days is costly, Mr. Gobah added, appealing to individuals, companies, and diaspora groups for support in cash or kind
“Even accommodation or meals for volunteers make a huge difference. These professionals give their skills for free; they just need basic logistics.”
Dr. Senanu Kwesi Dzokoto, Deputy Director of the National Health Insurance Authority, described the outreach as “filling critical specialist gaps” and pledged personal involvement in future missions.
Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Sefakor Kpormegbe said the event boosts both patient care and the hospital’s profile
“We’ve long admired VHN’s work across the region. Having them here expands our surgical capacity and draws attention to services available locally.”
Ketu North Municipal Chief Executive Rev. Martin Amenakpor praised the initiative and urged that it become a twice‑yearly event:
“This hospital was meant to be a flagship facility, yet many residents still travel to Accra or Kumasi for care. Regular outreaches will save lives and advertise what we have here.”
He added that the assembly will meet hospital management to explore ways of sustaining the programme.
Patients who underwent long‑delayed surgeries told the Ghana News Agency they were relieved to receive care close to home without prohibitive costs.
With support from local chiefs, opinion leaders and the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Mr. Eric Edem Agbana, VHN’s Weta mission is already being hailed as one of its most successful to date.
The network plans to announce its next district outreach in the coming months and continues to solicit partnerships to expand its lifesaving work across the Volta Region.
