UPSA Pays Tribute to National Heroes Lost in Tragic Helicopter Crash

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has joined the nation in mourning the loss of eight distinguished Ghanaians who perished in a tragic military helicopter crash near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

In a heartfelt statement signed by Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, the university expressed its deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the departed, describing their passing as a “heartache no one can heal.”

Among the victims were Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central. The crash, which occurred on the morning of August 6, also claimed the lives of six others, including government advisors and senior military personnel.

Prof. Mawutor, who described himself as a contemporary and friend of the two leading ministers, reflected on their “dedication and passion to public service and nation-building,” calling their deaths a painful loss to Ghana’s leadership and future.

“Their dedication and passion to public service and nation-building was inspiring,” the Vice-Chancellor wrote. “May we honour their memory by ending illegal mining.”

The UPSA community has been urged to stand in solidarity with the bereaved families and the nation as a whole during this difficult period. The statement offered comfort through prayer and the promise of hope, drawing strength from the belief in the resurrection.

“May God console us all with hope in the assurance of the resurrection morning,” Prof. Mawutor added. “May God/Allah grant them eternal rest.”

The statement from UPSA echoes nationwide tributes pouring in for the fallen statesmen and servicemen whose legacy of selfless service will be remembered for generations.
