Upper West Regional Police Secure 7-Year Jail Term for Child Defilement Offender

The Upper West Regional Police Command has secured a significant victory in the fight against child abuse, following the conviction of a 31-year-old man for defilement by the Wa Circuit Court.

The convicted individual, Issahaku Waris, a resident of Wa Zongo, was found guilty of defiling a 5-year-old girl on Thursday, April 24, 2025. The court, presided over by His Lordship Jonathan Avoogo, sentenced Waris to seven (7) years imprisonment on Friday, July 18, 2025.

According to the police, Waris was apprehended just two days after the incident, on Saturday, April 26, 2025, by officers from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU). The swift arrest and subsequent prosecution were made possible through thorough investigations and cooperation from the victim’s family and the wider community.

In a statement signed by ACP Peter Kamasa, Deputy Regional Police Commander, the Upper West Regional Police Command emphasized its unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable groups—especially children—from abuse and exploitation.

“The conviction is a testament to our dedication to justice and child protection. We urge all citizens to continue supporting the fight against all forms of abuse by reporting such cases promptly,” the statement read.

The Police Command reaffirmed its resolve to ensure that perpetrators of sexual and domestic violence face the full rigour of the law and encouraged the public to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding the rights and welfare of children.
