The Upper West Regional Police Command has successfully secured the conviction of a notorious armed robber, Adinan Mahmoud, also known by the alias “Okra”, following a string of armed robbery incidents in the region.
Mahmoud, 25, was arrested on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at his hideout in Sandemuni, a suburb of the Wa Municipality. His apprehension came as a result of a series of intelligence-led operations spearheaded by the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate.
On Monday, June 2, 2025, he was arraigned before the Wa Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Jonathan Avoogo. Mahmoud pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit crime (robbery) and robbery. The court subsequently sentenced him to 18 years of imprisonment with hard labour.

Two other suspects, Abdulai Ibrahim alias Baba and Abdulai Kipo, who were allegedly involved in the crimes, pleaded not guilty and have been remanded. Ibrahim is in prison custody, while Kipo remains in police custody as the case continues. Their next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
Residents of Wa and surrounding communities have expressed relief at Mahmoud’s conviction, with many welcoming the enhanced sense of security in the area.
“The removal of Okra from the streets brings significant relief to residents, who can now feel more secure in their communities,” stated ASP Micheal Toya of the Public Affairs Directorate, Upper West Region.
The Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public safety, emphasizing its dedication to tracking down all individuals who threaten the peace and stability of the region.
