Thousands Gather at Independence Square for Candlelight Vigil Honouring Daddy Lumba

Thousands of Ghanaians filled Independence Square in Accra last Saturday night to honour the life and legacy of the late highlife icon, Daddy Lumba, in a moving candlelight vigil that paid tribute to his unparalleled contribution to Ghanaian music.

Clad in black mourning attire with red headbands, mourners illuminated the square with glowing candles, creating a solemn yet celebratory atmosphere that reflected on a musical career spanning more than three decades.

The event featured a blend of emotional tributes, poetry recitals, and choral renditions, alongside powerful performances of Daddy Lumba’s timeless classics. The crowd sang along to beloved hits that have long served as soundtracks to Ghanaian life, love, and culture.

Prominent figures from the entertainment industry and public life joined the gathering to pay their respects. Highlife legend Bessa Simons, who also serves as President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), and Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), Presidential Adviser on Diaspora Affairs, were among the dignitaries present.

In heartfelt speeches, they praised Daddy Lumba for his immense contributions to the Ghanaian music industry and pledged their commitment to ensuring he is given a fitting and honourable burial.

The night was made even more memorable with appearances of Ghana’s top musicians and entertainers, including Sarkodie, Bola Ray, SP Kofi Sarpong, Kwabena Kwabena, Pat Thomas, and Andy Dosty. Their tributes through music added emotional weight to the already powerful gathering.

The candlelight vigil forms part of a broader schedule of commemorative activities being organised to celebrate the life and enduring influence of Daddy Lumba. The late musician, whose career left an indelible mark on Ghana’s cultural identity, is being remembered not just for his artistry, but for his dedication to uplifting the Ghanaian music scene.

As the flicker of candles slowly dimmed into the night, so too did the voices of thousands of fans echo the melodies of a man whose music will remain eternal in the hearts of Ghanaians.
