COPEC Rejects Proposed 20% Transport Fare Hike, Calls Move Unjustified and Harmful to Ghanaians

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC) has issued a strong statement dismissing reports of an imminent 20% increase in public transport fares, describing the move as unjustified, insensitive, and lacking consensus among key stakeholders. In a press release signed by COPEC’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Duncan Amoah, the organization responded to a recent announcement by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) that public transport fares would rise by 20% effective Friday, August 8, 2025. COPEC insists that no such agreement has been reached with major transport unions, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other driver groups. Cedi Appreciation: Transport Minister urges domestic airlines to reduce prices

Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Minister of Transport, Wednesday urged domestic airline operators to consider reducing fares as the cedi appreciates against other currencies. Mr Nikpe made the call on the sidelines of a stakeholder meeting convened by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in Accra to discuss issues in the sector and efforts to position Ghana as a leading aviation hub in the sub-region. “The domestic airlines (Passion Air and Africa World Airlines) have said they are working at it considering other factors, we are hoping that very soon th...

A key highlight of the visit was the strategic reconfiguration of Terminal 2, which is being repurposed to help ease congestion at Terminal 3, especially during peak travel hours. Mr Nikpe said the inspection was necessary to move beyond boardroom discussions and ensure the delivery of aviation infrastructure met required standards and timelines. “We…have been talking about how to expand and improve upon our airport faciliti...

The Ministry of Transport has inaugurated a 13-member inter-agency committee to review the Road Traffic Regulations 2012 (L.I. 2180) to allow commercial operations of motorcycles, known as “okada,” and tricycles. The committee, comprising representatives from key institutions and law enforcement, has three weeks to propose amendments, including operational modalities for implementing commercial motorcycles and tricycles. It will engage stakeholders such as transport operators, “okada” riders, and the public. Inaugurating the committee in Accra, Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister of Transport, said motorcycles and tricycles had become essential modes of transport, offering flexibility and access in areas with poor connectivity. “In some areas, 'okada' has completely taken over tr...
