Police Probe Deadly Clashes During Homowo Festival at Sowutuom and Anyaa
The Accra Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into violent clashes that marred the climax of this year’s Homowo Festival celebrations at Sowutuom and Anyaa on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
According to preliminary police reports, the disturbances began when a misunderstanding broke out between followers of two rival chiefs during the sprinkling of the traditional food, Kpokpoi. The disagreement quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire, throwing the celebrations into chaos.
The violence intensified as some attendees attempted to leave the festival grounds, leading to further attacks at Olebu. In the process, three people — Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah alias Nii Kwashiebu, Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan, and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo — lost their lives.
