President Mahama Grants Amnesty to 998 Prisoners
President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners across the country, following recommendations from the Prisons Service Council and in consultation with the Council of State, in line with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
Out of a total of 1,014 inmates recommended for clemency, 998 were approved by the President to benefit from the exercise. The categories of convicts who received the presidential pardon include those who have shown good conduct, the aged, persons with serious health conditions, and others deemed deserving of mercy.
The decision is part of government’s commitment to decongest the country’s prisons and promote the reformation and reintegration of inmates into society.
