Bending AI to Africa’s needs: the key to transforming classrooms

By Niall McNulty, AI Product & Innovation Leader, Cambridge University Press & Assessment The opportunities that artificial intelligence (AI) offer African teachers and students are immense; the AI education market in the Middle East and Africa is projected to hit $1.7 billion by 2030. Yet in Sub-Saharan Africa, where student–teacher ratios can reach 50:1 and many children still lack access to quality learning resources, the need for innovative solutions is urgent. What excites me most about AI in African education is the potential to address persistent inequalities in ways that haven’t been possible before. For too long, students in under-resourced schools have had fewer opportunities simply because their teachers lacked access to support, materials, or professional developm...

Changing the conversation in health care

The Language/AI Incubator, an MIT Human Insight Collaborative project, is investigating how AI can improve communications among patients and practitioners. Generative artificial intelligence is transforming the ways humans write, read, speak, think, empathize, and act within and across languages and cultures. In health care, gaps in communication between patients and practitioners can worsen patient outcomes and prevent improvements in practice and care. The Language/AI Incubator, made possible through funding from the MIT Human Insight Collaborative (MITHIC), offers a potential response to these challenges.  The project envisions a research community rooted in the humanities that will foster interdisciplinary collaboration across MIT to deepen understanding of generat...

Ms Genevieve Partington ,Country Director of Amnesty International (AI), Ghana  The Amnesty International (AI), Ghana has urged the government to gradually close down witch camps and reintegrate the so-called accused persons back into the society. The various witch camps in the country, it said were not a refuge rather symbol of societal neglect with limited access to water, safe housing, food and security, adding, “Reintegration must be accompanied by support systems, including housing, healthcare, and economic empowerment programmes.” Ms Genevieve Partington (fourth from right) and other development partners launching the report Photo: Seth Osabukle “These so-called ‘witch camps’ are not places of refuge; they are symbols of fear, exclusion, and deep-seated injustic...

AI’s Impact on Elections: New Policy Paper Highlights Urgent Global Challenge

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming political campaigns worldwide, creating unprecedented opportunities while amplifying risks for democratic processes. According to the newly launched policy paper, The Pervasive Influence of AI on Global Political Campaigns 2024, AI-driven techniques, such as generative AI (genAI), have revolutionized voter engagement through personalized messaging. However, genAI has also emerged as a double-edged sword: while enabling effective campaigning, it has been a significant source of disinformation, eroding trust in democratic institutions. For instance, the United States, classified as “severely polarized” and ranked 3rd among 28 countries for polarization, illustrates how AI-generated propaganda exacerbates societal divisions. Further, the U.S. ra...
