The Pope John Old Boys Association (POJOBA) has expressed profound sorrow over the sudden demise of one of its most distinguished members, Daasebre Hon. Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash earlier today.
Dr. Omane Boamah, a member of the 1994/96 year group of Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary in Koforidua, was serving as Ghana’s Minister for Defence at the time of the accident. His death, along with other high-profile officials, has sent shockwaves throughout the country.
In a heartfelt statement issued by the association, National President Isaac Aboagye Duah described the late Dr. Omane Boamah as “a proud and devoted alumnus” who epitomised the school’s motto, “Vela Damus” – We Set Sail. The association lauded him as a “beacon of leadership, service, and enduring brotherhood” who dedicated his life to national development.

A trained medical doctor and seasoned public servant, Dr. Boamah was widely known for his efforts in cybersecurity advocacy, online child protection, and his leadership in environmental safety initiatives. His commitment to public service was evident throughout his career, earning him admiration across political and professional circles.
POJOBA also fondly recalled his impactful presence at the school’s 67th Anniversary Speech and Prize Giving Day held on June 14, 2025, where he served as Guest of Honour. During his keynote address, he passionately urged students to embrace the Vela Damus spirit by striving not only for personal excellence but also by contributing meaningfully to their alma mater and the nation at large.
“The POJOBA fraternity is devastated,” the statement read. “We mourn the loss of a patriot, a visionary, and a beloved brother. His legacy of service and excellence will be remembered and celebrated forever.”
The association extended its condolences to the bereaved family, as well as to the government and people of Ghana. Details of funeral and memorial arrangements to honour the late Daasebre will be announced in due course.
Dr. Omane Boamah’s passing marks a dark day for Ghana, as the nation mourns not only a public servant of exceptional calibre but also a symbol of integrity and commitment in the service of others.
May his noble soul rest in perfect peace.
