Passing of Daddy Lumba: Former President John Agyekum Kufuor Pays Emotional Tribute to Highlife Legend

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has joined the nation in mourning the passing of Ghanaian Highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, affectionately known as Daddy Lumba, describing the news of his death as shocking and deeply painful.

In a heartfelt press release issued from his office on Monday, July 28, the former president expressed disbelief over the unexpected death of the celebrated musician, admitting he had not been aware of any illness.

“The news of the passing away, this past weekend, of one of the foremost Ghanaian highlife artists ever, Daddy Lumba, hit me like a thunderbolt,” the statement read. “I never heard of his illness, which makes it all the more shocking.”

President Kufuor praised Daddy Lumba for his unmatched talent, iconic voice, and timeless lyrics that captivated audiences across Ghana and around the world. He described Lumba as a national treasure whose music was “thrilling, transcendental, and enjoyable,” and admitted to being one of his devoted fans.

“Daddy Lumba… surely captivated the hearts and minds of many in Ghana, and indeed, many highlife enthusiasts the world over,” he said. “I count myself as one of his favourite devotees.”

The former president also recalled fond memories of attending Daddy Lumba’s annual Night of the Legends concerts, several of which he had been personally invited to.

As the nation grieves, Kufuor encouraged Ghanaians to find comfort in the legacy Daddy Lumba leaves behind, describing him as “a precious gift of Our Creator to us all.”

He extended his sincere condolences to the widow, children, and extended family of the late icon and prayed for God’s strength for them in this difficult time.

“May The Almighty God give him a befitting rest in His bosom,” the statement concluded.
