Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Attafuah Laments State of Baba Yara Stadium, Calls for Urgent Action

Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo Constituency, Vincent Ekow Attafuah, has raised strong concerns over the continued closure and deteriorating condition of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, describing the situation as a national embarrassment and a major setback for Ghana’s football development.

In a strongly worded statement, the MP criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, noting that seven months into its administration, no concrete efforts have been made to restore the iconic Kumasi stadium to its former glory.

Attafuah, a passionate advocate for sports and youth development, emphasized that the current state of the stadium is severely affecting Asante Kotoko, one of Ghana’s most decorated clubs, as they prepare for their upcoming campaign in the CAF inter-club tournaments.

“Kotoko deserves better ahead of the CAF tournament. The team needs a proper home ground to compete and represent Ghana with pride. The current situation is unacceptable,” he said.

The MP also warned that the continued closure of the stadium is having serious economic consequences for the Ashanti Region and is damaging Ghana’s international image as a sports-loving nation.

He has therefore issued a call for urgent intervention, urging the government to:

  • Immediately fund repairs of the stadium,
  • Fix the leadership failures responsible for the neglect, and
  • Restore national pride by making the Baba Yara Stadium fully operational.

The Baba Yara Stadium, once the heartbeat of Ghanaian football and a hub for major sporting events, has remained unfit for use due to unresolved infrastructure issues, with fans and football stakeholders growing increasingly frustrated.

As the CAF tournaments draw near, the spotlight is now on the government to demonstrate commitment to sports infrastructure and honor the legacy of Ghana’s football giants.
