The Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&MC) of Ghana has expressed grave concern over the increasing trend of unprofessional behavior among student nurses, midwives, and practitioners on various social media platforms.
In a statement issued by the Council, it noted that several disturbing videos and online publications have surfaced involving trainees, nurse assistants, and practicing nurses engaging in conduct that violates the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct governing the profession.
The Council cited three major areas of concern, including:

- The misuse of nursing and midwifery uniforms in unauthorized social media content purporting to offer public education;
- The use of abusive and derogatory language towards leadership and other stakeholders; and
- The sharing of misleading or unverified health information under the guise of professional advice.
According to the Council, such behavior is “grossly unprofessional” and undermines the integrity, respect, and ethical standards that define the nursing and midwifery professions. It further warned that these actions not only tarnish the image of the profession but also erode public trust in Ghana’s healthcare system.
The N&MC reminded all students and practitioners that it holds the exclusive mandate to accredit institutions and license individuals to practice as nurses and midwives in Ghana. Therefore, no individual or group is authorized to provide public education or professional guidance on behalf of the Council without official approval.
The statement cautioned that disciplinary measures, including suspension or revocation of licenses, will be applied to any individual found guilty of breaching the professional code of conduct.
“We urge all stakeholders to uphold the dignity and sanctity of the nursing and midwifery professions and to report any misconduct to the Council for appropriate action,” the statement added.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining professionalism, integrity, and ethical responsibility across all levels of nursing and midwifery practice in Ghana.
