NPP ready for Delegates Conference; constitutional reforms top the agenda

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to convene in Accra on Saturday for its Annual Delegates Conference to deliberate on key reforms aimed at repositioning the Party for future victory.

The Conference, to be held on the theme “Rebuilding together with our values,” will focus on unity and renewal following the Party’s defeat in the 2024 General Election.

Over 5,500 delegates are expected to gather at the University of Ghana Stadium from 19–20 July 2025 to review proposed constitutional amendments ahead of internal elections.

Reports from the National Chairman and General Secretary will be presented, with Party leadership expected to account for developments during the past year, including the general election.

Despite an injunction application filed by two members seeking to halt the Conference, the Party stated it had not received formal notice and would proceed with preparations.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency on Friday afternoon confirmed ongoing arrangements at the venue.

Party officials were seen supervising activities within and outside the stadium, while police officers coordinated security measures.

The venue was adorned with banners featuring past and present Party figures, and NPP colours—red, blue, and white—decorated walls and streetlights.

The Elections Committee’s directive prohibiting billboards and posters of presidential aspirants was strictly enforced, with no such displays observed.

In an interview, Mr Henry Nana Boakye, NPP National Organiser, said the Party would be tough on the display of posters by supporters of flagbearer hopefuls.

He said that police had been notified to ensure maximum security and urged delegates to adhere to Party guidelines, warning that only accredited individuals would be permitted entry.

A key reform proposal from the Frank Davies Committee seeks to expand the delegate base for electing the next NPP flagbearer.

Party officials argue that the current system lacks inclusivity and may encourage vote-buying due to the limited number of eligible voters.

If endorsed by a two-thirds majority, the proposal will amend Article 19 of the Party’s constitution.

The NPP has scheduled its presidential primary for Saturday, 31 January 2026, to select a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The date was approved by the National Council following a meeting of the National Executive Committee on June 17, 2025, and will not be subject to discussion at the Conference.
