The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a scathing statement condemning what it describes as “state-sponsored persecution” of its members by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. According to the NPP, recent actions taken by state security operatives amount to politically motivated intimidation and represent a grave threat to Ghana’s democratic institutions.
In a press release signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party cited two high-profile incidents as evidence of an orchestrated campaign to harass and silence dissenting voices.
“Rambo-Style” Arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi

At approximately 7:00 AM on Friday, May 23, Mr. Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as “Adenta Kumi,” was reportedly arrested at his residence by heavily armed men believed to be operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). The NPP alleges that six of the officers were masked and carried AK-47 rifles in what the party described as a “brazen display of intimidation.”
The party links Mr. Kumi’s arrest to his recent petition addressed to President John Dramani Mahama, which called for the dissolution of a committee reviewing petitions for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
“The state’s response to this legitimate exercise of democratic rights has been brute force and harassment, rather than due process,” the NPP stated, accusing the government of attempting to obstruct justice and silence whistleblowers.
Chairman Wontumi Targeted Amid Ongoing Investigation
In a separate incident, the home of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, was also reportedly visited by armed officers. According to the NPP, this follows a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) invitation issued on May 19, requesting his assistance in an ongoing investigation.
The party claims that Chairman Wontumi had already communicated his unavailability on the originally proposed date of May 21 due to medical reasons and had agreed to be available on May 26. Despite this, heavily armed security personnel allegedly stormed his residence.
“This is nothing short of political harassment,” the party’s statement emphasized.
A Threat to Democracy
The NPP argues that these events form part of a broader pattern of abuse of state power meant to stifle opposition voices, erode the rule of law, and undermine democratic governance.
“These developments represent a calculated pattern of abuse of state power designed to weaken the opposition and corrode the democratic fabric of our nation,” said General Secretary Kodua Frimpong. “Such practices have no place in a transparent democracy governed by justice and equal protection under the law.”
Call for Action
The NPP is calling on civil society, the international community, and all well-meaning Ghanaians to condemn what it views as politically motivated repression.
“The time to defend our democracy is now,” the statement concluded.
