NIA Debunks Claims of Reduced Ghana Card Validity Period

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that the validity period of the Ghana Card has been reduced from ten (10) years.

In a statement, the Authority clarified that no such amendment to the law has been made or proposed, stressing that the Ghana Card remains valid for ten years from the date of issuance, after which renewal is required.

The NIA explained that comments by its Executive Secretary, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, at a recent media engagement were misrepresented. According to the Authority, Mr. Deku did not announce any change in policy but merely noted that, in the future, reviews could consider a shorter update interval due to rapid technological advancements and the evolving uses of the Ghana Card.

“This suggestion was only to emphasize the need to keep the card responsive to technological changes, much like the decision to upgrade from the initial 2D-Barcode for children under 15 to today’s dual interface, multipurpose biometric card,” the statement noted.

The Authority further explained that the current ten-year renewal period is necessary because the physical card has an estimated lifespan of a decade, while cardholders’ personal features may change over that time, requiring updated photographs and record verification.

The NIA urged the public to disregard the false information and assured Ghanaians of its commitment to delivering a secure, reliable, and future-ready national identity system.
