MultiChoice Ghana Responds to Minister’s Comments on DStv Pricing

MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, has issued a formal response to recent remarks made by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, concerning the company’s pricing structure in Ghana.

In a statement signed by Managing Director Alex Okyere, MultiChoice expressed regret over the Minister’s position, stating that it does not reflect the spirit of good faith and open engagement the company has maintained in its dealings with both the Minister and the National Communications Authority (NCA).

The company disclosed that it has made a proposal to both the Minister and the NCA suggesting an alternative avenue for further engagement in hopes of finding a resolution to the matter.

Having operated in Ghana for over three decades, MultiChoice reaffirmed its commitment to the Ghanaian market, noting the importance of its workforce, including employees, dealers, agents, and other local partners. The company cautioned that any impasse in dialogue could adversely impact the livelihoods of those who depend on the DStv value chain.

Addressing the core issue of subscription fees, MultiChoice reiterated its ongoing efforts to keep prices as low as possible without compromising service quality or customer choice. It acknowledged the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi, but rejected calls for drastic fee reductions, stating such actions would not be feasible under current economic and operational realities.

“We have never described the Cedi’s appreciation as a ‘fluke’,” the statement clarified, adding that pricing decisions are driven by long-term economic sustainability, including currency volatility, inflation, and operating costs.

The company emphasized its commitment to complying with all Ghanaian laws and regulations and stated its willingness to continue constructive engagement with the Minister and the NCA.

MultiChoice concluded by assuring subscribers of its dedication to maintaining service quality while navigating the challenging economic environment.
