MoFFA Directs Unlicensed Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities to Regularize Operations Within One Week

The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has issued a directive to all mortuaries and funeral facilities operating without the required licenses to take immediate steps to regularize their operations within one week from the date of the announcement.

The Agency, which was established under Part Two of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829), is mandated to license, control, and regulate all facilities connected with the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains in Ghana.

In a public notice, MoFFA expressed concern over the increasing number of mortuaries and funeral facilities operating without authorization, describing the situation as a violation of Section 55 of Act 829. The section explicitly states that “a person who practices in a facility without registering as a practitioner or fails to license a facility commits an offence and is liable to the payment of a fine or the temporary or permanent closure of the facility.”

The Agency has therefore cautioned all unlicensed operators to comply with the law immediately or risk having their facilities closed down. Licensed operators and practitioners have also been reminded to ensure their credentials remain valid to avoid any sanctions.

MoFFA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all mortuaries and funeral facilities across the country adhere to professional and sanitary standards to safeguard public health and preserve human dignity.

For inquiries and assistance in the regularization process, the Agency has urged facility operators to contact its offices located at the Former Ministry of Health Main Building, Ministries, Room 22, or reach them through the following numbers: 0302 956 550, 0243 868 384, 0244 659 795, 0243 164 470. Additional information is available on the official website: www.moffa.gov.gh.

The statement, signed by the Registrar of MoFFA, concluded with the Agency’s motto: “Protecting the Living; Dignifying the Dead.”
