In a solemn and emotional statement, the Minority in Parliament has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians, including two Cabinet Ministers and key public officials.
Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, led the outpouring of grief in a statement issued shortly after Chief of Staff Julius Debrah formally announced the incident to the nation. The crash, which occurred earlier today, has plunged Ghana into mourning.
Among the deceased are Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, NDC National First Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, former NDC Parliamentary Candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three Ghana Armed Forces personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Describing the loss as “a profound human tragedy that touches the very soul of our nation,” the Minority Leader called on Ghanaians to unite in grief and solidarity. “These were fathers, husbands, sons, and devoted patriots who awakened this fateful Wednesday morning with the noble intention of serving Ghana,” he stated.
Personal Tributes
Afenyo-Markin offered heartfelt reflections on the personal relationships he shared with the late ministers. He spoke warmly of Dr. Murtala Mohammed, noting their shared respect across party lines and his deep commitment to environmental protection. “His passion transcended politics. He possessed the rare quality of listening with the intent to understand,” the Minority Leader recalled.
On Dr. Omane Boamah, Afenyo-Markin remembered him as “a scholar with a patriot’s heart,” whose vision for a modernized and respected Ghana Armed Forces left a lasting impression. “Behind every political position lies a human being—someone’s beloved family member, someone’s trusted friend,” he added.
National Unity in Mourning
Offering condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, Afenyo-Markin assured him of the Minority’s full support during this period of national grief. “Your loss is our loss; your grief is our grief. In this moment of national tragedy, we stand united with you,” he declared.
He extended the same sympathy to the bereaved families of the victims, urging the country to remember the fallen as heroes who died in the line of duty.
A Call to Honour Their Legacy
In concluding his statement, Afenyo-Markin urged Ghanaians to honour the memories of the deceased by recommitting to the ideals they stood for. “Let us support our Armed Forces, protect Ghana’s environment, and work together for our national security and prosperity,” he said.
The Minority Leader emphasized that public service must remain a sacred trust and that the legacy of these eight souls should serve as “everlasting beacons of light, guiding us towards a more united and prosperous Ghana.”
May their souls rest in perfect peace.
