MCUG Petitions Authorities Over Alleged Police Harassment by Tesano MTTD Division

The Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana (MCUG) has petitioned authorities over what it describes as ongoing harassment, intimidation, and extortion of its members by officers of the Ghana Police Service, particularly those attached to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at the Tesano Division.

In a strongly worded petition signed by its General Secretary, Mr. Abugri Timothy Agengri, the union expressed deep concern over the continuous targeting of motorcycle couriers, who play a vital role in the country’s delivery and logistics sector. According to the union, several of its members have been “arbitrarily arrested, detained, and had their motorcycles impounded without due process.”

“These acts have not only affected our livelihoods but have also disrupted essential delivery services that many Ghanaians rely on daily,” the petition stated.

The MCUG is calling for urgent intervention from higher authorities to ensure fairness and accountability. Specifically, the union is requesting:

  1. An immediate cessation of police harassment of motorcycle couriers, particularly by officers of the Tesano MTTD Division.
  2. The formation of an independent committee to investigate ongoing cases involving motor riders and the Tesano MTTD. The committee, they suggest, should include representatives from the union, the Ghana Police Service, and other key stakeholders.
  3. Implementation of the committee’s findings to foster a more respectful and transparent working relationship between police and motorcycle operators.

The union emphasized that its members are law-abiding citizens who contribute significantly to Ghana’s urban economy through courier and delivery services. It also urged the Ghana Police Service to engage constructively with riders rather than resort to actions that threaten their livelihoods.

“We believe your office is well-positioned to facilitate a resolution to this matter and ensure that the rights of our members are protected,” the petition concluded.

As of press time, officials from the Ghana Police Service and the MTTD had yet to publicly respond to the union’s claims.
