Local agricultural leader calls for revitalisation of farming education to tackle unemployment

Mr Isaac Agyiri, the 2020 District Best Farmer of Twifo Atti Morkwa and CEO of the Showebouwy Foundation, has called for the reintroduction of agriculture as a core subject in schools at all levels.

Agyiri argued that incorporating agricultural studies in the curriculum from basic education to tertiary institutions, would equip students with essential practical skills and knowledge crucial for their future employment. 

The appeal comes at the back of a government initiative mandating Senior High Schools to cultivate farms to provide food for their students.

He emphasised that starting agriculture education in basic schools would provide students with hands-on experiences to benefit them throughout their academic journey.

Mr Agyiri believed that if students engaged in cultivating crops such as maize, cabbage, beans, and pepper within school premises, they would learn valuable farming techniques, and also help schools become self-reliant.

The savings generated from these initiatives could be reinvested in other projects to foster growth in the schools and the country as well.

Mr Agyiri was over the weekend, honoured during the 10th Speech and Prize Giving Day of Twifo Hemang Senior High Technical School for cultivating 10 acres of maize farmland to support the school’s self-sufficiency efforts.
