The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, former First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, and an illustrious alumna of the University.
In a message of condolence issued by the University, KNUST described the passing of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings on Thursday, October 23, 2025, as a “profound loss to the entire University community and to Ghana as a whole.”
Nana Konadu, a proud alumna of KNUST, pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art, graduating in the 1974/75 academic year. During her time at the University, she distinguished herself not only academically but also in sports and student leadership. Residing in Africa Hall, she served as Deputy Secretary and later Secretary of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), as well as a member of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS). Her years at KNUST, the statement noted, were marked by “exceptional leadership, integrity, and service,” qualities that defined her subsequent life of national and international influence.

KNUST paid glowing tribute to her remarkable legacy as Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady, describing her as “a woman of conviction, courage, and compassion whose influence transcended politics.” The University acknowledged her tireless advocacy for women’s empowerment, social transformation, and inclusive national development through the 31st December Women’s Movement and her broader contributions to public life.
“Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings redefined the role of women in leadership and demonstrated the very ideals KNUST seeks to instil in its students—integrity, service, and the courage to lead change,” the statement emphasized.
The University community—comprising management, faculty, staff, students, and the Global Alumni Association—extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, Asanteman, her children, and the people of Ghana.
“May her indomitable spirit continue to inspire generations, and may her soul find peaceful rest. Farewell, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings—KNUST is proud of you,” the statement concluded.
