HTU Students with Disabilities call on Regional Minister, advocate for inclusion and support

A delegation from the Students with Disabilities Association of Ho Technical University (HTU), led by their President, Yorm Agbogbo, has paid a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu.

The focus was to discuss issues affecting students with disabilities and to advocate for stronger inclusion and support.

The meeting, held at the Regional Coordinating Council on Wednesday was part of the association’s broader efforts to engage key stakeholders in promoting disability rights and inclusion, particularly within tertiary education and regional governance structures.

During the engagement, the delegation outlined several challenges faced by students with disabilities on campus, including inaccessible infrastructure, limited assistive devices, inadequate funding support, and social exclusion.

They appealed to the Minister for greater visibility, inclusion, and resource allocation to ensure that no student is left behind.

Agbogbo expressed gratitude to the Minister for his time and willingness to listen to their concerns.

He emphasised the need for deliberate efforts to integrate the needs of persons with disabilities into all levels of development planning.

“We are not asking for special treatment; we are asking for equal opportunity. Accessibility and inclusion must be at the heart of development,” she said.

Mr. James Gunu, in response, commended the students for their advocacy, courage, and leadership, noting that their visit was both timely and inspiring.

“I applaud you for stepping forward to engage leadership on these important issues. It shows that you are determined to be part of the solution, and I stand with you,” he said.

The Regional Minister, who has a history of working with disability groups, reaffirmed his personal and professional commitment to promoting equity, accessibility, and social justice in the region.

He disclosed that steps had been initiated to enhance the participation of persons with disabilities in governance and regional development planning.

These include the inclusion of disability concerns in local government discussions, accessibility audits of public buildings, and advocacy for disability representation in decision-making bodies.

“As a region, we are committed to the national disability agenda, and I will personally ensure that the concerns you have raised are addressed at both regional and national levels,” Mr. Gunu assured.

The Minister encouraged the group to continue engaging leadership at all levels, build strategic partnerships, and take advantage of available government interventions and scholarship opportunities for students with disabilities.

He also called on HTU management, civil society organizations, and the private sector to work collaboratively with the group to build a more inclusive academic and social environment.
