Government Intensifies Peace Enforcement Efforts in Bawku Amid Escalating Chieftaincy Conflict

The Government of Ghana has announced a significant shift in its approach to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict, moving from peacekeeping to peace enforcement following a recent surge in violence that threatens to derail years of peacebuilding efforts.

According to a statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to the area to maintain law and order and protect lives and property. The move coincides with the intensification of curfews in Bawku and other affected communities as part of broader security measures to ensure public safety.

“The Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property,” the statement assured, adding that residents must cooperate fully with the military to help restore calm.

Government also expressed deep appreciation to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his mediation efforts in the conflict. The statement highlighted that with the collaborative support of the Nayiri and Zugrana, the Otumfuo-led peace initiative had made substantial progress toward resolving the long-standing conflict—until the latest incidents of violence disrupted the near-resolution.

“We commend His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for mediating the conflict and appreciate all stakeholders who are supporting the peace process,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu noted.

While the government acknowledged the inconvenience the current peace enforcement measures may pose to law-abiding citizens, it reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to restoring peace and stability in Bawku and surrounding areas. Special emphasis was placed on the protection of students, many of whom are being evacuated as a safety precaution due to targeted threats.

Government has urged all factions to refrain from violence and support ongoing peace efforts for the collective good of the region and the nation at large.
