The Government of Ghana has officially transitioned from a peacekeeping to a peace enforcement approach in Bawku and surrounding communities following a disturbing surge in violence related to the protracted chieftaincy conflict.
According to a statement released by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, the decision to intensify military operations comes as recent killings threaten to derail significant progress made through mediation efforts.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have now been fully deployed to maintain law and order in Bawku and other affected towns, with stricter curfews and security measures being enforced to ensure public safety. The government assures all residents that the military is under firm instructions to take every necessary action to protect lives and property.

“The safety of every Ghanaian is paramount. The peace enforcement strategy is not aimed at punishing communities but protecting them,” said Mr. Ofosu. “We urge all parties to refrain from violence and work together to restore lasting peace.”
The Government expressed deep appreciation to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his tireless efforts in mediating the crisis. His initiative, supported by the Nayiri and the Zugrana, had brought the conflict near resolution until the recent violent incidents derailed the peace process.
Officials also acknowledged the inconvenience the intensified operations may cause to law-abiding citizens, especially students and workers, but emphasized that the measures are necessary to secure long-term peace.
Residents have been strongly encouraged to cooperate with the Ghana Armed Forces and adhere to curfew restrictions. The Government reiterated its unwavering commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the safety and stability of the Bawku area and beyond.
