The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned the attempted arrest of a JoyNews reporter and the reported assault of an eyewitness by a military officer during a demolition exercise. The incident, which has sparked public outcry, is being described by authorities as a blatant violation of press freedom and citizens’ rights.
In a statement issued by Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to President John Dramani Mahama, the government expressed deep concern over the conduct of the soldier involved. “Such actions are utterly unacceptable to the John Mahama administration and have no place in our democratic society,” the statement read.
President Mahama, through his spokesperson, reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the safety and freedom of journalists in Ghana. “A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy, essential for accountability, transparency, and informed public discourse,” Kwakye Ofosu emphasized.

Assurance of Justice and Accountability
The government has taken swift steps to address the incident. President Mahama has directed the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to launch a thorough investigation and ensure that appropriate disciplinary and punitive measures are applied immediately.
“The rights of all Ghanaian citizens must always be protected,” the statement continued, reiterating government’s dedication to upholding democratic principles and protecting individual freedoms.
Press Freedom a Non-Negotiable Pillar
The attempted arrest and physical assault have drawn criticism from media rights advocates, who see it as part of a worrying trend of hostility toward journalists. The government’s prompt condemnation, however, has been welcomed as a step in the right direction.
President Mahama’s administration has consistently maintained its stance on media freedom, insisting that journalists must be allowed to carry out their duties without fear, harassment, or intimidation.
Next Steps
As investigations proceed, the public is being assured that those responsible for the misconduct will be held accountable without fear or favour. The outcome of the probe is expected to set a strong precedent for the protection of journalists and the upholding of civil rights in Ghana.
