Ghana TVET Service Sanctions Three Technical Institute Principals Over Unauthorized Fee Collection

The Ghana TVET Service (GTVETS) has taken firm disciplinary action against three principals of technical institutes following allegations of unauthorized fee collection and extortion.

The affected institutions are Agona Swedru Technical Institute in the Central Region, Sunyani Technical Institute in the Bono Region, and Madina Technical Institute in the Greater Accra Region. Management has directed the principals of these schools to proceed on 30 days of administrative leave with immediate effect to allow for investigations.

According to a statement issued by the Corporate Affairs Unit of the Ghana TVET Service, the decision follows credible reports that the institutions imposed unapproved fees in violation of the Service’s directives. The alleged unauthorized charges include admission fees, boarding protocol fees, payments for changing residential status, fashion practical item fees, bedsheet payments, and PTA-related charges.

“These practices contravene the Government’s Free TVET Policy and undermine efforts to promote equitable access to technical and vocational education nationwide,” the statement emphasized.

To address the matter, investigative committees have been constituted to conduct thorough and impartial inquiries into each case. The committees’ findings will guide management in determining further disciplinary measures where necessary.

In the interim, all official responsibilities and institutional assets have been handed over to the respective Regional Directors of the Service, who will oversee the day-to-day administration of the schools in addition to their regular duties.

The Ghana TVET Service reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for corruption, extortion, and any conduct that compromises the integrity of the technical and vocational education system.

“Management remains resolute in upholding accountability, transparency, and fairness in the administration of TVET institutions across the country,” the statement said, assuring parents and students of its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
