The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity following the tragic helicopter crash at Asikaman near Akrofuom, which claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians, including key government officials and military personnel.
In a solemn statement released during their August Plenary Assembly at the National Catholic Secretariat in Accra, the Conference paid tribute to the victims, describing them as “men of proven dedication” who served Ghana with integrity, commitment, and honour.
The victims of the fatal crash include:

- Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
- Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation
- Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Senior Presidential Advisor
- Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Government Technical Advisor
- Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Director of Protocol
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot
- Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, co-pilot
- Sergeant Ernest Addo, flight engineer
The Conference, led by Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Bishop of Sunyani and President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, described the incident as a “grave national loss”, not only to the families and institutions affected but to the entire nation.
“These were men who gave of themselves in service to the Republic, to its institutions, and to the people of this land,” the statement read. “Their sudden and untimely departure is… a grave loss to the nation.”
The tragedy struck just as the Bishops were in session, casting a “long shadow” over their deliberations. In response, the gathering was moved to communal prayer and reflection in memory of the fallen.
Calling on all Ghanaians to unite in this moment of sorrow, the Bishops reminded the public of the fragile and fleeting nature of life, and the importance of “service rooted in integrity, sacrifice and the common good.”
The statement concluded with a prayer for eternal rest for the departed souls and comfort for their grieving families and loved ones.
“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.”
As the country grapples with the weight of this tragedy, the Catholic Church joins the nation in mourning and calls for faith, unity, and resilience in the face of loss.
