GHANA ARMED FORCES SHIFTS FROM PEACEKEEPING TO PEACE ENFORCEMENT IN BAWKU

In a decisive move aimed at restoring stability and ending the cycle of violence in the troubled Bawku area, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has officially transitioned from a peacekeeping mandate to a peace enforcement posture, following a directive from the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.

This shift comes in response to the escalating security threats posed by armed groups in Bawku and surrounding areas, including Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla. Recent incidents have involved violence, reprisal attacks, and tragic loss of innocent lives — a situation the GAF describes as a “dangerous pattern” that now threatens national peace and security.

In a statement signed by Captain VA Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations of the Ghana Navy, the Armed Forces outlined a robust and targeted approach to what it calls “peace enforcement operations.” According to the statement, these military actions will be deliberate and forceful, with the goal of enhancing community protection and restoring law and order.

“The military will use all necessary force to restore law and order during its operations and calls on all citizens to adhere to law and order including all agreed restrictions during the period,” the statement read.

As part of the renewed security measures, the government has imposed a strict curfew from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM in the affected areas. The curfew will be strictly enforced.

The Armed Forces are urging residents in the operational zones to fully cooperate with security personnel. Any attacks on security forces or attempts to obstruct military operations, the statement warns, will be met with “appropriate response.”

Despite the increased military presence and tougher posture, the GAF reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilian lives and maintaining peace, stressing that its actions are guided by its constitutional duty to defend the state and safeguard its citizens.

The Ghana Armed Forces is calling on all well-meaning Ghanaians, especially residents of Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla, to support this national effort to restore peace.
