Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed deep disappointment over what he perceives as neglect and exclusion by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the very political movement he once led to back-to-back electoral victories.
In a candid conversation with Member of Parliament for Abetifi and NPP flagbearer hopeful, Bryan Acheampong, the statesman did not mince words about his growing sense of marginalization within the party.
“If this party still has elders… I am one,” Kufuor emphasized, making it clear that he still considers himself an integral part of the party’s legacy. He criticized the current leadership for failing to keep him informed about the party’s internal affairs, despite his vast experience and historical role in its growth.

“Have I deteriorated to the point where, after being fed, I’d claim I haven’t eaten? No—I haven’t reached that stage yet. My mind and memory are intact,” the former President stated, rejecting any suggestion that age has diminished his capacity to contribute meaningfully.
Kufuor reflected on the NPP’s ideological roots, tracing its lineage back to the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and recalling its long journey through political struggles and eventual triumph in 2000—a moment he described as a defining milestone in Ghana’s democratic development.
“I’ve been quiet, but make no mistake, I’ve been watching. Closely,” he said. “The least the party can do… is keep me informed. Let me hear what’s happening.”
The former President voiced confusion and disappointment at the apparent disregard for his role and wisdom, saying, “And now… I’m being sidelined? Ignored? I don’t understand it. I really don’t.”
John Agyekum Kufuor, who led Ghana from 2001 to 2009, is widely hailed for stabilizing the country’s economy, strengthening democratic institutions, and elevating Ghana’s standing in the international community.
His public comments are expected to trigger serious introspection within the NPP, particularly regarding how the party engages with its founding members and elder statesmen whose sacrifices and leadership helped shape its path to power.
