FDA Suspends Production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix Over Safety Concerns

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has announced the immediate suspension of the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, following a series of serious quality and safety violations discovered at the production facility of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited.

This decisive action comes in the wake of multiple consumer complaints and a subsequent FDA investigation, which revealed lapses in the company’s manufacturing processes. According to the FDA, critical equipment maintenance was poor and monitoring systems were inadequate, posing significant risks to public health.

Among the key findings were compromised sealing mechanisms that affected the integrity of the canned products, leading to contamination and bloating in the pouches, specifically the 380g and 1.05kg variants. Some pouches were also found to contain mold, further escalating health and safety concerns.

The FDA had earlier directed a market recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products and certain batches of the product in pouch packaging, as part of efforts to prevent the affected products from reaching consumers.

In a statement signed by the Acting Chief Executive Officer, the FDA emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability, confirming that internal investigations have been launched to determine whether there were any regulatory lapses, especially since Nutrifoods had already been barred from manufacturing the product in January 2025.

The Authority assured the public that any dereliction of duty discovered in its internal processes would be dealt with decisively, and measures would be taken to strengthen regulatory oversight.

The FDA is urging consumers, retailers, and wholesalers to comply with the suspension and recall directive and to avoid the sale or consumption of the affected products.
