A key milestone has been reached with regards to FAO fisheries capacity support to Ghana with the delivery of a Fisheries Monitoring Centre (FMC) training, held in the offices of the Fisheries Commission between 7 – 11 July 2025.
Some 20 officers of the Fisheries Commission were trained in a variety of relevant aspects – focusing on the FMC mandate, roles and responsibilities, concepts and terminology, the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), the carrying out of cross-checks and verifications and behavioural analysis using the vessel monitoring system.
Knowledge and skills acquired were reinforced by the undertaking of a range of practical exercises tackled by break-out groups.

The opportunity was also taken to finalise draft SOPs on FMC procedures and the receipt and processing of the advance request for port entry required to be submitted by foreign flagged vessels seeking entry to designated ports in accordance with Article 8 of the 2009 FAO Agreement on Port State Measures to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
The training was delivered in the framework of ongoing capacity support under the Seventh PSMA Global Capacity Development Programme Support Project funded by the European Union.
