Eastern Regional Police Command Announces Comprehensive Security Measures for 2025 Odwira Festival in Akropong

The Eastern Regional Police Command has announced extensive security arrangements to ensure peace, safety, and order throughout this year’s Odwira Festival celebrations in Akropong, organized by the Chiefs and people of Akwapim.

In a statement signed by Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, Head of Public Affairs for the Eastern Region, the Command assured the general public, particularly those travelling from across the country to participate in the festivities, that adequate security will be provided before, during, and after the festival.

This year’s Odwira Festival commenced on Monday, October 20, 2025, and will climax on Friday, October 24, 2025, with a grand durbar of Chiefs and other commemorative activities.

To maintain law and order, the Police Command outlined several key security measures to be strictly observed:

  • No weapons of any kind will be permitted at the durbar grounds.
  • No live ammunition shall be discharged within the municipality or at the durbar grounds.
  • Only persons officially authorized to fire musketry will be allowed to do so, and such individuals must wear official identification tags at all times.
  • Motorbikes will not be allowed beyond the Old Assembly Junction in Akropong. Designated parking areas for motorbikes include the Audit Service premises and the Old Court premises.
  • For effective traffic management, the following areas have been designated as official parking zones:
    • Shoe Fabrique
    • Municipal Assembly
    • Dachie Junior School
    • Christ Church Park
    • Old Court Premises

The Command further advised that all traditional and cultural activities associated with the festival, such as the visit of Amaprobi to bring the Odwira, should be conducted during daylight hours to ensure full security coverage.

To ease vehicular congestion, motorists travelling to the Eastern Regional capital and beyond are encouraged to use alternative routes — specifically the Ofankor–Pokuase–Nsawam road or the Dodowa–Somanya–Adukrom route — to avoid heavy traffic expected on the Ayi-Mensah–Aburi–Mamfe stretch.

Superintendent Tetteh emphasized that the Police will maintain a visible presence across highways, the Akropong township, and the durbar grounds throughout the celebrations. “We shall be on duty both day and night to ensure that everyone enjoys the festival in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility,” he assured.

The statement further cautioned that the Police will not hesitate to deal firmly, in accordance with the law, with any individuals or groups who engage in activities that threaten public peace or security.

The Eastern Regional Police Command, while wishing all celebrants a joyous and incident-free Odwira Festival, reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law, order, and safety for all residents and visitors.
