The Berekum East Municipal Assembly in the Bono Region has introduced a ‘Pay to Dump’ policy to improve proper waste management and sanitation in the Municipality.
Mr Gabriel Kyere, the Assembly member for the Mpatasie Electoral Area and Chairman for the Assembly’s Sanitation Committee, disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Berekum.
Besides improved sanitation, he added that the policy was an innovative strategy to enhance the revenue generation of the Assembly, saying the revenue from the policy would only be utilized to improve sanitation facilities.
Mr Kyere was speaking to the GNA during a clean-up exercise organized to rid the municipality of filth, and urged the residents to capitalize on the policy and dump refuse into the containers placed at vantage points in the municipality.
With the policy, he said the assembly would not spare anybody who might litter around or dump refuse anyhow.
He stressed the Assembly’s commitment to improving the quality of life of the people, and urged them to support development programmes.
The participants cleared choked gutters, swept the streets and evacuated some refuse dumps in the Municipality, and picked plastic waste and materials during the dubbed “keeping Berekum clean” campaign.
